BRAMPTON - Infrastructure Ontario and William Osler Health System have awarded a fixed price contract to Plenary Health to design, build, finance and maintain the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, located in downtown Brampton.

The announcement signifies that all contractual steps have been completed and construction will start immediately. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2016.

The hospital project is a significant economic opportunity for local suppliers and contractors. At the peak of construction, Plenary Health estimates more than 350 workers will be on site daily.

The new wellness centre will be a state-of-the-art health care facility for residents of Brampton and surrounding communities. Services and programs geared towards preventative care, diagnostic services and wellness programs will offer more choices for residents and access to innovative models of care.

The project will incorporate sustainable design and construction features, with the goal of achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification. LEED® buildings focus on healthy indoor environments, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and efficient use of energy, water and other resources.

The value of the contract with Plenary Health is approximately $491 million in today's dollars. Over the 30-year life of the contract, when adjustments for anticipated inflation are made, the contract value is $530 million. The contract cost covers the design and construction of the facility, building maintenance, life-cycle repair and renewal, as well as project financing.

The Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness project underwent an open, fair and competitive procurement process and Plenary Health submitted the proposal that delivered the best value for Ontario taxpayers.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with William Osler Health System to develop Peel Memorial Centre, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.
