About the Project

  • The Durham Region Courthouse provides Superior and Ontario Courts justice services under one roof, consolidating what previously operated from eight different locations.

  • Six courtrooms outfitted for video remand and additional courtrooms with video conferencing capabilities.
  • The flexibility to accommodate trials requiring additional security and trials with multiple accused.
  • Two remote video testimony rooms to accommodate vulnerable and child witnesses.
  • Enhanced accommodation for interpretation including one jury room permanently equipped for simultaneous interpretation and three portable interpretation booths.
  • Barrier-free design, including no courthouse steps, five fully barrier free courtrooms, infrared hearing assistance and barrier free witness stand, jury box and spectator positions in all courtrooms.

  • The project has rejuvenated a brownfield site. 
  • The new courthouse is one of the most energy-efficient provincial government buildings.
  • The building's maintenance company has committed to consume 42 per cent less energy than a similar building designed in compliance with the Model National Energy Code for Buildings.
  • Environmentally friendly design and construction that achieved LEED Gold certification and complied with BOMA BEST. These standards emphasize energy management, conservation and reducing indoor air pollutants. 
  • The installation of ultra-low flow plumbing fixtures and a storm water collection technology will reduce water used for irrigation by 50 per cent and will reduce water consumption in the entire facility by 20 per cent.

Economic Benefits

  • At the peak of construction, there were more than 400 construction workers on site daily. 
  • Approximately 1,500 people, both staff and visitors, conduct business daily in the new facility, bringing increased demand for restaurant meals, office space and other services in downtown Oshawa, which contributes to the revitalization of the downtown Oshawa area.
