SUDBURY - Infrastructure Ontario and Hôpital régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital (HRSRH) have selected EllisDon Corporation to build and finance the hospital's redevelopment project.  This is Phase Two of the project that will consolidate all hospital-based acute and rehabilitation services from three sites to one.

“We're very pleased that a building team has been selected, paving the way for construction to begin,” said Public Infrastructure Renewal Minister David Caplan.  “This project demonstrates that our government is fulfilling its commitment to modernize Ontario hospitals and stimulate economic growth.”

Rick Bartolucci, Minister of Northern Development and Mines, and MPP for Sudbury, also announced today that EllisDon Corporation will begin site mobilization right away and construction will begin within one to two weeks.

“This is an exciting step forward for the hospital and our entire community,” said Bartolucci.  “This project is part of our government's plan to modernize hospitals, increase access to health care professionals and upgrade medical equipment across Ontario.”

"Modernizing Ontario's hospital infrastructure is an integral part of improving our health care system," said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. "Our investment will provide facilities that are modern, well-maintained, safe and comfortable for patients."

The building team, led by EllisDon Corporation also includes financing arranged by the Royal Bank of Canada.

Highlights of the redevelopment project include:

  • A new emergency department
  • 17 operating rooms
  • An expanded intensive care unit
  • Modernized medical equipment
  • New Dialysis Stations
  • Expanded cardiac catheterization lab and cardiac rehabilitation services
  • Enhanced rehabilitation services for physiotherapy, respiratory and speech

“We are excited that construction is almost ready to begin.  Over the next few days, there will be a lot of activity on the site as the building team mobilizes for construction,” said Vickie Kaminski, HRSRH President and CEO.  “We also look forward to the day when our staff and physicians can provide quality, state-of-the-art care for our patients within a one-site regional hospital system.”

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Sudbury Regional Hospital to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.  The Sudbury Regional Hospital project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
