Construction Set to Begin in Early April
TORONTO - Bird Construction has been selected to build and finance the new Brampton youth justice facility, an innovative complex that will replace the Toronto Youth Assessment Centre and the Invictus Youth Centre for youth in conflict with the law.
Designed to meet the unique needs of youth, the 192-bed, campus-style facility will allow detained youth to move from facilities that are currently shared with adults, and will provide them with rehabilitation, education and vocational services, housing and counselling.
The new construction of the campus-style accommodations and the renovation of the existing buildings have been designed to enhance the appearance of the local urban environment. In the next stage of the procurement process, the contract will be finalized, allowing construction to begin shortly thereafter.
The building team, led by Bird Construction also includes financing arranged by CIT Group Securities (Canada) Inc.
Infrastructure Ontario will work with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services to construct the youth justice facility, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The youth justice facility project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
