Construction Set to Begin in March

TORONTO - M. Sullivan & Son Limited has been selected to build and finance phase one of the expansion and renovation of Quinte Health Care Belleville General.  Construction is expected to begin in March.

The redevelopment project will modernize the hospital and increase its capacity to meet the needs of a growing and aging population.

“We're very pleased with the selected building team,” said Public Infrastructure Renewal Minister David Caplan.  “They provided the best-value bid from a short-list of qualified companies and I look forward to them beginning construction.”

"Ontario's hospitals are an integral part of our health care system," said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. "Our investment will provide even better care in facilities that are modern, well-maintained, safe and comfortable for patients."

The building team, led by M. Sullivan & Son Limited also includes financing provided by Stonebridge Financial Corporation.

“The McGuinty government is committed to improving services and providing facilities and health care we need,” said Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and MPP for Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington. “Once completed, Quinte Health Care Belleville General will provide increased service delivery for patients who deserve the very best facilities we can offer.”

“This redevelopment project is one of the largest public sector projects in our community,” said Ernie Parsons, MPP for Prince Edward-Hastings. “Not only is it great news for improved healthcare in our region but this project also brings economic opportunity and jobs to our community as well.”

Redevelopment of Quinte Health Care includes:

  • construction of a new wing at the Belleville site
  • expansion of the complex continuing care and rehabilitation units
  • a small addition to expand the intensive care unit
  • redeveloping support services such as food services
  • new facilities for the Children's Treatment Centre
  • an increase in overall hospital capacity of 77 beds

In future phases, Quinte Health Care will renovate and redevelop the emergency department, hospital laboratory, surgical suites and medical and mental health units.

"Our staff and volunteers are delighted to see that construction is almost ready to begin," said Lloyd Churchill, Chair, Board of Directors, Quinte Health Care.  "We are looking forward to moving ahead with the building team and getting construction underway."

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Quinte Health Care to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, controlled and accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the Province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects -- ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.  The Quinte Health Care project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30 billion plus infrastructure investment plan.
