Hospital Celebrates 'Topping Off' of New Facility

WOODSTOCK - Hospital officials and construction workers celebrated the 'topping off' of the new Woodstock General Hospital today.

'Topping off' is a tradition on building sites that signifies when the highest point of the building has been reached. Construction is now approximately 35% complete. There are currently 260 workers on site daily and this number is expected to rise above 300 by the end of the year.

The new state-of-the-art hospital will replace the existing facility, which opened in 1895. Work on the new facility continues to progress on schedule. The next step in construction is to close in the exterior of the facility, allowing mechanical, electrical, drywall work and interior finishes to proceed during the winter months. Exterior insulation and masonry is scheduled to start later this month.

Construction began in October 2008 and will be completed in 2011. ITS / EllisDon Corporation is building the new facility.

“Today marks a significant milestone in the building of our new hospital,” said Natasa Veljovic, President and CEO of Woodstock General Hospital. “This progress is a testament to the successful collaboration and hard work of all project partners.”

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Woodstock General Hospital to redevelop the facility, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
