Hospital construction boosting local economy

Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, Oakville mayor Rob Burton and representatives from Halton Healthcare Services and the Oakville Hospital Foundation celebrated the official topping off of the new Oakville Hospital today, marking the highest point of construction.

Numerous members of the construction team were also on hand to commemorate the milestone. Attendees signed a steel beam that will be placed within the building, which is progressing on time and on budget toward substantial completion in summer 2015, with an anticipated move-in date later the same year.

More than 73,000 cubic metres of concrete have been poured into the structure - enough to build a walkway from downtown Oakville to Pearson International Airport. There are currently more than 550 workers on site daily and at the peak of construction there will be more than 1,200.

The new, state-of-the-art hospital will have capacity for 457 inpatient beds and offer a full range of acute health care services, including complex continuing care rehabilitation, renal dialysis, acute inpatient care, maternal child care and inpatient and outpatient adult, child and adolescent mental health services.

Construction activities taking place in the next few months will include:

  • exterior pre-cast panel installation
  • roofing structural steel installation
  • exterior glass and curtain wall installation
  • elevator installations
  • metal stud partitioning
  • continuation of sewer installation
  • mechanical and electrical rough-ins

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Halton Healthcare Services to develop the new hospital, which will remain publicly owned and publicly controlled.

Infrastructure Ontario is a crown agency of the Province of Ontario that delivers large, complex infrastructure renewal projects on time and on budget.
