Hospital addition completed ahead of schedule and on budget

John Gerretsen, MPP for Kingston and The Islands and Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, joined hospital staff and health care partners today to celebrate substantial completion of Kingston General Hospital's redevelopment project. This project includes the official reopening of the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario.

The project was completed four months ahead of schedule and on budget and has resulted in more than 310,000 square feet of new and renovated space and increased capacity to 459 beds.

The redevelopment project has created a more family oriented environment and improved patients' access to cancer care and kidney dialysis. Services have also been expanded and upgraded in Intensive Care, the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, Paediatrics, Inpatient Acute Mental Health and Central Processing Services, which cleans, decontaminates and sterilizes instrument sets and patient care items.

The building team, led by PCL Constructors, began work in July 2008. At the peak of construction there were approximately 175 workers on site daily and approximately 90 per cent of the workers were local.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care worked with Kingston General Hospital to redevelop the facility, which will remain publicly owned and publicly controlled.

Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to delivering some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects, on time and on budget; managing one of the largest real estate portfolios in Canada and providing real estate services, such as asset management and property and land management; and providing the public sector and not-for-profit organizations with long-term financing to renew public infrastructure.
