This spring, the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre (JHCC) is celebrating a monumental milestone with the completion of a redevelopment project that began in February 2008. This fulfills a vision shared by staff, physicians, patients, volunteers and the community to build a state-of-the-art, full-service hospital offering high quality and innovative care to patients across the region.

From the beginning, redevelopment was about replacing a large portion of the aging facility with a new, modern environment that enabled staff and physicians to provide outstanding care. Features of the redevelopment include:
increased bed capacity, from 234 to 338 beds;

  • an increased number of single patient rooms, which are more comfortable for patients and safer from an infection control perspective;
  • direct sight lines to the outdoors from many clinical spaces;
  • and improved function and flow across the site so patients have a better experience and staff can work more effectively.

Additional highlights include:

  • a state-of-the-art Emergency Department built to maximize efficiency and patient flow with infection control principles at the forefront of its design;
  • an impressive Surgical Suite including nine large, new operating rooms equipped with the latest in medical technology;
  • a consolidated Diagnostic Imaging Department featuring new leading-edge imaging equipment, including a new 3T MRI;
  • an enhanced Oncology Inpatient Unit designed to meet the needs of patients and their families;
  • a new Hematology Inpatient Unit featuring patient rooms with picturesque views of the Hamilton skyline and specialized air filtration systems;
  • a custom-designed Intensive Care Unit that offers more privacy and comfort to our most critically-ill patients and their visiting loved ones;
  • outpatient support services such as the Patient Registration Centre, Medical Diagnostic Unit and Specimen Collection;
  • a redesigned front lobby and accessible information area to assist patients and visitors upon arrival;
  • and a fully-equipped auditorium and meeting space to enable professional collaboration and development.

As one of Hamilton Health Sciences' largest hospital building projects, the JHCC includes approximately 425,000 square feet of new construction and 35,000 square feet of renovated space. As a result of redevelopment, more than 70 per cent of the Juravinski Hospital is either new or renovated.
The project was completed on time and on budget. Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care worked with Hamilton Health Sciences to manage the redevelopment project.

Interesting facts about the project:

  • Approximately 1,281,336 work-hours went into construction of the redeveloped hospital.
  • More than 50,000 cubic metres of rock was excavated from the site in order to build the new portion of the hospital.
  • The building stands 26 metres high and 135 metres long.
  • Forty tonnes of steel rebar and about 120 truckloads of concrete were used to construct and reinforce the hospital's massive foundation.
  • Construction required the assembly of two tower cranes, each standing 244 metres high.
  • The building's open-concept design and floor-to-ceiling windows allows natural light to filter through the space creating a warm and welcoming environment for patients and visitors.
  • The entire front wall of the building is comprised of tinted glass. Multi-coloured glass panels were added intermittently throughout to add a splash of colour and dimension into the space.
  • Sunken gardens surrounding the building's lower levels give patients a direct view to the outdoors despite being below ground.
  • On the north side of the new building, there are spectacular views of the City of Hamilton in patient and public areas.
