Request for Qualifications Issued for Runnymede Healthcare Centre's New Replacement Hospital

TORONTO - Residents of the Toronto area are a step closer to improved health care today with the release of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to shortlist teams to build and finance a new state-of-the-art hospital on the existing Runnymede Healthcare Centre site.

The new facility will be a 200-bed hospital to replace and expand the existing 95-bed complex continuing care hospital. “This marks an important milestone for our community,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. “The project is part of the government's five-year, $30 billion plus infrastructure investment plan that represents the biggest investment in health care in more than a generation.”

“Hospitals are an important part of Ontario's health care system,” said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “Our government is committed to modernize and expand health care infrastructure to improve access to quality health care.”

“We're very excited to be moving forward with this important next step,” said Connie Dejak, President and CEO, Runnymede Healthcare Centre. “The government's commitment to our project is important to all those we serve who have neurological degenerative diseases. It is helping us to meet our goal to develop new and innovative ways of delivering quality healthcare.”

The Runnymede Healthcare Centre project RFQ was issued as part of a combined qualification process including healthcare infrastructure projects in four other cities across the province.

Once qualified project teams have been short listed, they will be invited to respond to individual Requests for Proposals (RFP) for each of these projects starting early in 2007.

Runnymede Healthcare Centre will manage the project with Infrastructure Ontario, an arm's length Crown corporation dedicated to the renewal of the province's hospitals, courthouses and other essential public assets.

Using an Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) model that ensures appropriate public control and ownership, Infrastructure Ontario uses private financing for large-scale and complex projects to strategically rebuild vital infrastructure, on time and on budget.

All infrastructure projects will be guided by the principles in the government's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, ensuring public ownership of core public assets such as hospitals, schools and water and wastewater infrastructure.
