Government's Investment Will Help to Improve Health Care Services

TORONTO-Infrastructure Ontario received bids from companies today to build and finance the expansion and redevelopment of Trillium Health Centre - Mississauga and Trillium Health Centre - West Toronto.

In Ontario, the average hospital is more than 40 years old.  The provincial government's ReNew Ontario plan addresses the aging infrastructure by modernizing and expanding health care facilities, on time and on budget.

“This is one of many projects being delivered under the McGuinty government's five-year $30-billion plus infrastructure investment plan to renew and modernize infrastructure,” said Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. “The plan ensures value for taxpayer dollars as we build strong, prosperous communities.”

The RFP to build and finance the project was issued on June 16, 2006.

In the next stage of the procurement process, the bids will be evaluated to select a contractor for the expansion and redevelopment.  The winning bidder will be named in early 2007, with construction scheduled to begin shortly thereafter.

"We're on the side of Ontario families who want and deserve the very best health care," said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long Term Care. "That's why our investment in hospitals and health care will grow by an additional $1.9 billion to $35.4 billion this year, rising to $38.8 billion in the following year."

The expansion and redevelopment of Trillium Health Centre - Mississauga includes:

  • a new cardiac catheterization lab
  • an operating room for cardiac surgery
  • additional cardiovascular intensive care beds
  • additional coronary care beds
  • diagnostic and support services for an increase of up to 135 inpatient beds.

The Trillium Health Centre - West Toronto project includes:

  • expansion of ambulatory surgical care facilities
  • redevelopment and expansion of the Urgent Care Centre
  • creation of a cancer detection and treatment facility
  • creation of healing gardens
  • expansion of a new South entrance.

“This marks an important milestone for Trillium Health Centre,” said Honourable Harinder S. Takhar, Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship and MPP for Mississauga Centre. “This project is part of the McGuinty government's plan to modernize hospitals, reduce wait times and upgrade medical equipment across Ontario.”

“We're excited to see this project moving forward,” said Honourable Laurel Broten, Minister of the Environment and MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore. “Through redevelopment and expansion, Trillium Health Centre will continue to play a vital role in providing health care to residents of our community.”

"We are encouraged by the government's continued commitment and support for our hospital," said Trillium Health Centre President and Chief Executive Officer Ken White. “Our community will benefit from improved accessibility to care, state-of-the-art facilities and an improved environment for our patients and for health care professionals.”

Trillium Health Centre will manage this project with Infrastructure Ontario, a Crown corporation dedicated to the renewal of the province's hospitals, courthouses and other essential public assets.  Ensuring appropriate public control and ownership, Infrastructure Ontario uses alternative financing and procurement to rebuild vital infrastructure, on time and on budget.

All infrastructure projects are guided by the principles in the government's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, ensuring public ownership of core public assets such as hospitals, schools and water and wastewater infrastructure.
