Request for Qualifications Issued

Lakeridge Health's Oshawa redevelopment project reached a significant milestone today with the release of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for project teams to build and finance the hospital's project.

This is the first step in selecting a project team that will be responsible for new construction of two additional floors on the South Infill and the fit-out of six in-patient floors above the Durham Regional Cancer Centre. The project will also include renovations to the A Wing and Central Service and Reprocessing Department for the cleaning, repair and sterilization of medical equipment.

“This is an exciting step forward for our patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and communities across the Lakeridge Health hospital network,” said Marion Saunders, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Lakeridge Health. “In just three years this will be the site of one of the most up-to-date hospitals in the province, and one that is better able to meet the needs of the region's population growth. The expansion will bring care closer to home for patients across the region.”

This project will increase the capacity of Lakeridge Health's Oshawa hospital in a number of inpatient areas, including Medical/Surgical, Rehabilitation and child, adolescent and adult mental health. As well, the hospital will be able to accommodate additional surgical cases, emergency and ambulatory visits.

“These new patient care areas and beds will allow us to fully utilize the recently opened North Wing and improve our capacity to receive patients from other hospitals who require more specialized care,” added Brian Lemon, CEO, Lakeridge Health.

Lakeridge Health's Oshawa project RFQ was issued as part of a combined qualification process including three health care infrastructure projects across the province.

RFQ submissions will be reviewed to short-list project teams with the construction experience, the qualified personnel and the financial strength to deliver a project of this size and complexity.

Short-listed teams will be invited to respond to individual, project specific Request for Proposals (RFP). The RFP for Lakeridge Health Oshawa is expected to be released in early spring 2008. Lakeridge Health will continue to own and operate all aspects of the Oshawa site - including the new areas.

Infrastructure Ontario and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will work with Lakeridge Health to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.
