Lakeridge Health has reached another key milestone with the release of a request for proposals (RFP) to build and finance the final phase of Lakeridge's Oshawa hospital redevelopment project.

Highlights of Lakeridge Health's Oshawa project include:

  • Increased capacity to accommodate more surgical cases, emergency and ambulatory visits;
  • Fit-out of six floors in the south-east tower, located above the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, for paediatrics, oncology, general medical/surgical and rehabilitation inpatient services, as well as child, adolescent and adult mental health services and outpatient dialysis departments;
  • Construction of two new floors for paediatric support, child and adolescent mental health inpatient support and maternal program administration;
  • Renovations of ambulatory maternal care, adult mental health support and administration, rehabilitation support, patient management services and the maternal newborn program; and
  • Renovations to the central sterilization and reprocessing department, paediatric support, mental health and medical oncology support.

“This project is part of the McGuinty government's ReNew Ontario plan - a five-year $30-billion-plus infrastructure investment plan that represents the biggest investment in provincial infrastructure in more than a generation. Rebuilding Ontario's hospitals and long-term care facilities, enhances the quality of life and the quality of care for families throughout the province,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal.

“This expansion is an essential part of the government's commitment to renew hospitals,” said George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “These projects will help lower wait times and improve access to quality family health care for all. Once complete, area residents will be able to get the care they need, when they need it, close to home.”

“Lakeridge Health's Oshawa expansion has been talked about - but our government has moved it forward,” said Wayne Arthurs, MPP for Pickering-Scarborough East. “We are committed to providing the resources and infrastructure to meet our community's health care needs.”

“Lakeridge's project will make a real difference in areas that matter to people in this community: shorter wait times, better emergency care and expanded services for the benefit of Oshawa residents,” said Joe Dickson, MPP for Ajax-Pickering.

The following five building teams were short-listed through a request for qualifications issued in October 2007 and have been invited to bid on the project:

  • Aecon Buildings
  • Bondfield Construction Company Limited
  • Carillion Canada Inc.
  • Pomerleau Inc.
  • Vanbots Construction Corporation

These building teams have the construction, operational, and financial capacity required to undertake a project of this size and complexity. The release of the RFP is one of the final steps in the procurement process. Once submissions to the RFP are received and reviewed, a winning project team will be selected in late 2008, with construction scheduled to begin shortly after. A copy of the RFP is available on Infrastructure Ontario's website.

“We are excited about moving forward with this important phase of our redevelopment at Lakeridge Health Oshawa.  It will allow our communities and patients improved access to the excellent care provided by our dedicated staff, physicians and volunteers,” said Marion Saunders, Chair of the Lakeridge Health Board of Trustees. “The release of the RFP brings us closer to providing our patients with the best facilities that we can offer.  We wish to thank the Ontario government, the Oshawa Hospital Foundation and their generous donors for their financial support of this project,” added Brian Lemon, CEO, Lakeridge Health.

Infrastructure Ontario and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Lakeridge Health to redevelop the Oshawa hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.
