The request for proposals stage for pre-qualified building teams to submit their proposals to build and finance the final phase of Lakeridge Health's Oshawa hospital redevelopment project has closed.

Highlights of Lakeridge Health's Oshawa project include:

  • Increased capacity to accommodate more surgical cases, emergency and ambulatory visits;
  • Fit-out of six floors in the south-east tower, located above the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, for paediatrics, oncology, general medical/surgical and rehabilitation inpatient services, as well as child, adolescent and adult mental health services and outpatient dialysis departments;
  • Construction of two new floors for paediatric support, child and adolescent mental health inpatient support and maternal program administration;
  • Renovations of ambulatory maternal care, adult mental health support and administration, rehabilitation support, patient management services and the maternal newborn program; and
  • Renovations to the central sterilization and reprocessing department, paediatric support, mental health and medical oncology support.

“This is a very important milestone in moving this project forward.  On behalf of our community, patients, staff, physicians and volunteers, I would like to thank the provincial government for their leadership in maintaining the momentum on this expansion and other essential improvements at Lakeridge Health Oshawa,” said Doug Allingham, Chair of Lakeridge Health's Board of Trustees.

“This project builds on other important patient care improvements at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, including the new North Wing and Cancer Centre.  The expansion of these patient care services will allow us to improve access to quality patient care as our community changes and grows,” said Kevin Empey, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health.

Over the next few months, Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario will evaluate the bidders' proposals based on criteria set out in the request for proposals (RFP).  The successful bidder is expected to be announced in early 2009.

Infrastructure Ontario and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Lakeridge Health to redevelop the Oshawa hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
