Construction milestone celebrated

SUDBURY - Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services and MPP for Sudbury Rick Bartolucci and Sudbury Regional Hospital announced today that the first clinical floor in Sudbury Regional Hospital's South Tower is now occupied.  On November 21, 2007, more than 40 acute medical patients moved into the tower.

“The redevelopment of Sudbury Regional Hospital is important to everyone in the community and I'm pleased with the progress that is being made.” said Bartolucci. “We are one step closer to realizing the completion of the one-site hospital project thanks to the ongoing partnership between the McGuinty government and our community partners.  Our hospital will be completed on time and on budget and we, in advocacy should be very proud of that.”

This is the first unit to be permanently moved into the future one-site hospital.  Other patients are expected to be moved into the tower over the coming months and occupancy will be complete in late 2009.

“This marks an important milestone for us.  With the first hospital patients moved into our new tower, we are able to see our one-site regional hospital becoming a reality,” said Sudbury Regional Hospital President and CEO, Vickie Kaminski.  “This redevelopment project will allow our physicians and staff to provide the highest quality of care for our patients.”

The construction of the South Tower was part of the phase one redevelopment project.

Construction of phase two of the project began in March 2007 and will consolidate all hospital-based acute and rehabilitation services from three sites to one.  This project will help to improve health care services by providing:

  • A new emergency department
  • 17 operating rooms
  • An expanded intensive care unit
  • Modernized medical equipment
  • New Dialysis Stations
  • Expanded cardiac catheterization lab and cardiac rehabilitation services
  • Enhanced rehabilitation services for physiotherapy, respiratory and speech

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2009.
