ST. THOMAS - Infrastructure Ontario and St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital announced today that EllisDon Infrastructure STEGH Inc. has signed a fixed-price contract to build and finance the hospital's Emergency, Ambulatory and Mental Health redevelopment project. Today's announcement signifies that all contractual steps have been completed and EllisDon will begin to mobilize on-site immediately.

The project involves a three-storey addition to the northwest side of the current hospital building. The new addition will be approximately 106,000 square feet and will include:

  • a new emergency department;
  • surgical suite;
  • medical devices reprocessing department;
  • acute mental health unit with 15 inpatient beds and ambulatory services; and
  • ambulance garage.

The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital project underwent an open, fair and competitive procurement process. EllisDon Infrastructure STEGH Inc. submitted the proposal that delivers the best value for Ontario taxpayers.

At the peak of construction, there will be approximately 125 workers on-site. EllisDon estimates that approximately 50 per cent of the labour for the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital project will come from the London/St. Thomas area.

The contract commits EllisDon Infrastructure STEGH Inc. to build and finance the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital project for $63.3 million, which will be paid out at substantial completion. The contract guarantees a fixed price and a fixed-delivery date for the redevelopment of the hospital. Construction at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is expected to be complete in early 2018.

IO and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital to redevelop the facility, which will be publicly owned, controlled and accountable.
