Work Will Prepare Site for Redevelopment

BARRIE - Site preparation work began today to prepare for construction of the Phase I Expansion at Royal Victoria Hospital, announced Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. The work will include the realignment of the main sanitary, storm, water and gas services, new underground electrical ductbank, relocation of the hospital's main road, expansion of existing parking lots, and interior relocation of plumbing, medical gas and power and communication lines.

“This marks an important milestone in the redevelopment of Royal Victoria Hospital,” said Caplan. “The hospital is one of many projects in the McGuinty government's five-year $30- billion plus public infrastructure renewal plan to modernize infrastructure and ensure value for taxpayer dollars as we build strong, prosperous communities.”

“Upgrading and modernizing our hospitals is essential to our government's goal of providing a health care system that will help keep Ontarians healthy and provide excellent care if they are sick.” said Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman.

A sign was also unveiled at the hospital, revealing the future of health care improvements in the community. The project sign, which highlights key components of the major renovation and expansion project, was uncovered by hospital and government officials.

Royal Victoria Hospital President and CEO Janice Skot joined Caplan to unveil the official sign.

“This signals the start of a very exciting chapter in RVH's history,” said Janice Skot, President and CEO of Royal Victoria Hospital. “In just three years this will be the site of one of the most up-to-date hospitals in the province, and one that is better able to meet the needs of the region's exploding population. The expansion will bring care closer to home for patients across the region.”

Royal Victoria Hospital's Phase I Expansion Project will double the size of the existing facility and include the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. This new cancer centre will provide comprehensive care to more than 2,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients throughout Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka.

Highlights of the Royal Victoria Hospital project include:

  • Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre;
  • 101 additional inpatient beds;
  • an expanded Emergency Department;
  • an expanded Laboratory;
  • an expanded Diagnostic Imaging Department;
  • two additional Operating Rooms; and
  • a designated Coronary Care Unit.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Royal Victoria Hospital to redevelop the facility, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the Province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.  The Royal Victoria Hospital project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
