Hospital and government officials celebrate the structural completion of new wing

BELLEVILLE - Hospital officials, construction workers and community leaders gathered today to celebrate the completion of the steel structure and tour the construction site at Quinte Health Care Belleville General's new Sills Wing.

“With construction progressing, residents of our community can see the results of our government's commitment to modernize Ontario's hospitals,” said Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Prince Edward-Hastings and Minister of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs. “The government is improving Ontario's health care system by rebuilding hospitals and expanding the types of health services offered throughout the province.”

“The expansion and redevelopment began in March 2007 and when it's completed in early 2010, it will provide better access to health care and health professionals, more hospital beds and modernized facilities and equipment,” said Lou Rinaldi, MPP for Northumberland-Quinte West.

Dombrowsky and Rinaldi joined Jack Moore, Chair of the Board of Directors for Quinte Health Care, and representatives from M. Sullivan & Son Limited to celebrate the construction milestone and tour the site.  M. Sullivan & Son Limited is building and financing this first phase of the hospital's expansion and renovation project.

Once completed, redeveloped facility will increase the hospital's overall capacity by 36 per cent.

“I would like to thank our volunteers, fundraisers, hospital staff and the community for their generous donations and support of this project,” said Moore. “This construction milestone is a testament to the successful collaboration and hard work of all project partners.”

Infrastructure Ontario will continue working with Quinte Health Care to implement this phase of redevelopment at the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.
