TORONTO - St. Joseph's Health Care, London's (St. Joseph's) Regional Mental Health Care London and St. Thomas redevelopment projects continue to move forward with the selection of Malhotra Nicholson Sheffield Architects to provide the planning, design and compliance aspects for the two projects.

The compliance design team will further develop the Site Master Plan and prepare key documents to form the guidelines and performance requirements that the successful building team must work with when preparing the overall designs.

Both regional mental health facilities will serve individuals experiencing severe and persistent mental illness.

Regional Mental Health Care London will be constructed adjacent to Parkwood Hospital in London.  Its programs will accommodate inpatient and outpatient services for assessment; mood and anxiety disorders; psychosis; dual diagnosis; geriatric psychiatry; adolescent psychiatry; and concurrent disorders.

Regional Mental Health Care St. Thomas will be a new forensic mental health facility built on the existing lands in St. Thomas. It will provide specialized inpatient and outpatient services, including assessment, treatment, outreach and support services to individuals with a mental illness who have come into significant contact with the criminal justice system.

“This is an important milestone for St. Joseph's Health Care and the region's residents” said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “These redevelopment projects mean that South Western Ontario residents will have improved access to mental health services closer to home. Over the next few years, managing mental health services will be a top health care priority.”

“The government's $30-billion plus infrastructure investment plan will create thousands of jobs across the province and spur economic development that will benefit everyone in the region,” said Chris Bentley, Attorney General and MPP for London West.

Once the planning, design and compliance aspects are completed, the hospital and Infrastructure Ontario will issue a request for qualifications for a company to design, build, finance and maintain each of the redevelopment projects.  Under this model, risks associated with the design, construction and financing of complex hospital projects are transferred to the private sector.

“We are so pleased to be moving forward on these important projects,” said Cliff Nordal, President and CEO of St. Joseph's Health Care, London. “They will allow us to provide care in new, more modern and spacious facilities that are better equipped to meet the needs of patients and staff alike.”

Infrastructure Ontario will work with St. Joseph's Health Care, London to build the hospitals, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
